Inside Forward

Anya is a dedicated student athlete that has experience playing at the top junior and senior level in England. Her attitude, determination and willingness to learn and get better is something that all her coaches talk about. I would expect nothing less when she joins her team in the US.

About Me

I am focused, determined and always willing to go the extra mile to get the results I want. I have played hockey for many years and love it, whether it is training or playing, I never miss a session. I volunteer in many roles within my club; I have passed my junior club coaching qualification and love helping younger players learn the game. I am a qualified umpire and have umpired numerous junior matches - including the 2022 London Regional U12 Finals. I also helped set up and volunteer with Flyerz, our club’s section for children with pan-disabilities, I have particularly enjoyed the Flyerz involvement. I would look to continue such volunteering roles at my US college. As a student athlete, whilst my first love is sport and hockey, I enjoy my studies and have always got good results in tests and exams and am able to manage my time well to make sure I hit all deadlines. I am really excited about being able to combine studying Psychology, which I find so fascinating, with playing college sport to a high level. I recognise that stretching yourself to achieve both physically and academically requires planning, organisation and commitment, which are essential life skills. I am a team player, who finds it easy to get along with almost anyone.

INTERVIEW

I stand out as being very competitive and never wanting to lose, and I am a good team player. On the hockey field, I win 50/50 balls, gain lots of turnovers, and win a lot of short corners, whilst very seldom giving the ball away. I leave everything on the pitch, but am good at controlling my emotions.

Once I understood how the student athlete concept worked for field hockey in the US, I have been focused on going to college there. The opportunity to train and play as almost a full-time athlete, with the high level of support, great coaching and facilities is very attractive. I would love the opportunity to become the best hockey player I can be - rather than playing and training on a more informal basis as a student in the UK.

I started studying Psychology at A level in 2021 and have loved it, to the extent that I’ve decided that’s what I would like to major in at college. I find all aspects of Psychology fascinating, but particularly like the aspects involved with the criminal mind. At one stage, I thought that I would like to be a forensic pathologist, but at the moment I think I am most attracted to being a psychologist specialising in criminology. Therefore, the quality and optionality of the Psychology Department at the university or college I am looking at is important to me.
